Dissertation note The History of Shwebo Township (1948-1958) is an attempt by the doctoral candidate to present the prevailing situation of Shwebo immediately after Independence in 4th January 1948 ; the reconstruction, change and development in the ensuing decade in the climate of govemence as an independent nation just liberated from a century of British colonial rule in Myanmar. Shwebo is in fact a microcosm of the nation, and all happenings in the macro world reflects Shwebo in all aspects of the panornama. The dissertation presented an analysis of ten years of experimentation of the newly framed Constitution under supremacy of the people' mandate, and representative parliamentary democratic sychoice system formed by the political parties entrusted by electors through people 's choice by casting their ballot of right of determination in the electoral system to give the majority power to run the government. In retrospect Shwebo was chosen because it was the seat of power of the last Konbaung Dynasty founded by U Aung Zeya, King Alaungmintaya. This historical background provided an introduction to the sectors meriting discussion and analysis such as the political situation where partisan politics dominate the will of the people, and the catastrophic insurgency that stunted all efforts of reconstruction and development. The economic conditions discussed on the state of the Shwebo ecnomy, production and sale of paddy as social structure, education religion and religious festivals, Thingyan revelries and the popular witty slogans etc. The dissertation concludes with the reviews and critical summary on the entire dissertation.
