| Dissertation note |
This dissertation is an attempt to investigate the British administration of Lower
Myanmar from 1824 to 1885. The whole of Lower Myanmar fell under the British
after the two Anglo-Myanmar War, the First War occured in 1824 ending with the
Treaty of Yandabo by which Myanmar had to cede Rakhine and Taninthayi to the
British. The Second War was fought in 1852 after which Myanmar had to give up
Mottama and Bago. Then in 1862 Rakhine, Taninthayi, Bago provinces were
combined and governed together by the Chief Commissioner. During the period
from 1824 to 1885 Rakhine and Taninthayi provinces was ruled by the
Commissioner under the control of Governor of India. They took many years in
their attempts to restore law and order in Lower Myanmar, as there Were outbreaks
of political unrest and armed struggles in Rakhine and Taninthayi Provinces. Due
to the political instabilities, the population was scarce and the development was
lagged in the Taninthayi Provinces. After the annexation of Bago in 1852 it was
found that feudal system was still prevailing even under the rule of British after
the Second Anglo-Myanmar War. Bago Province was ruled under the control of
Governor General of India. The legislative power was under the control of
Governor General. The main undertaking of the British was law and order
restoration. Trustworthy and reliable servicemen were appointed. The important
departments and divisions were directly supervised by the British. The collection
of taxes in Rakhine, Taninthayi and Bago Provinces under the British rule is also
described in conjunction of the tax system practised by Myanmar kings. |
