In the long course of Myanmar history India was one of the immediate nighhours andcordial relatonships between two countries had been established since time immemorial. Unlike the relations with other neighbouring countries, Myanmar, through the long course of monarchical rule, accepted the indian kingship system and culture to some extent. Myanmar Kingship, belief, literature, judicial system, court customs establishement of palaces and social life of the people were more or less stemmed from the indian culture. After the British annexation of Indian sub-continent, there emerged political relations between the kingdom of Myanmar and the British-India. After the outbreak of three Anglo-Myanmar Wars in the nineteenth century, Myanmar became the colony of British- India. During the colonial period, the nationalists of Myanmar followed the political pattern of Indian nationalists in the struggle for independence. The intimacry between the national leaders of two countries was continued during the post independence era. This dissertation examines how the leaders of India and Myanmar established close relations after independence. In other words, the discussion is made on role of Myanmar and India in the international arena. Assessment is also made on Myanmar's shrewd and sensible political stand and strategy in relations with the two neighbouring powers: India and China. Ph.D University of Mandalay 2012
