Konbaung Period (1752-1885)
Myanmar Kings used to select sites by the Ayeyarwady River where they founded their Royal Capital Cities of the Kingdom. They organized Crown boatmen groups and built naval stations along the Ayeyarwady River and the Chindwin River, to defend the kingdom. The boats were built for military purposes whereas grand and picturesque barges with heavily gilded, multi-tiered spire were used for royal river cruise in state. As Myanmar Naing-ngan has many navigable rivers, creeks, and natural lakes, waterway vehicles played a very significant role not only for military purpose but also for conveyance of passengers and goods. This dissertation is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements in pursuing a Ph.D. degree. It is and attempt to study royal boats and barges of the Konbaung period, in order to examine the usefulness of these vehicles in administration, in military affairs and in socio-economic spheres of the people. The study indeed is made on all of waterway vehicles, besides the royal boats and barges, which revealed social status of the owners and users. Building techniques of boats and barges are also examined and discussed. Their role in unification of the country, in both offensive and defensive of military operations and in trading and transportation are also observed. Most importantly, the study sheds light on the life of royal boatmen status groups in the then society. Discussions are also made on their contributions to the country and society and on their socio-economic conditions, based on evidences provided by contemporary records in Parabaiks.
