502 _aIn the colonial period economic system practiced in Pakokku was capitalist economic system imported by the British Imperialist. But most of the businesses of Pakokku were in the hands of Myanmar citizens. The agriculture sector, the main life line of Pakokku economy had also greatly contributed to major businesses. Due to difference of climate, rains and soil, various crops were grown. Later more profitable cash crops such as cotton and groundnuts were favoured. Especially groundnut growing was successful. Second important business was palm-sugar production. In those days palm-farmers were the majority in the villages. Palm-sugar had an important role in Myanmar society. Roads and communication were fairly improved due to some improvements in trade and commerce. In addition to road and water transportation rails were built. As a result of basic trade in Pakokku, Pakokku became more prosperous than the other neighbouring towns in the district. According to the epigraphic evidence, bell-inscription, palm leaf manuscript, Parabaik and wall-paintings in Pakokku, Kings and people set up many pagadas, lake and religious buildings due to surplus wealth. The development of the local business in Pakokku was the main reason for booming of ecomomy.
