_aIn preparing this dissertation on the Agrarian Society of Shwebo Township during the Konbaung Period, based on the hundreds of contemporary manuscript records collected from the study area, focus is made on the then agriculture and its related economy engaged in by the peasants. In a broader sense, it is the study of socioeconomic life of the people who had been living in this township. The economic development of the people greatly depended mostly on the ruling monarchs, because he could demand corvee labour and recruits. The Shwebo was an agricultural region. So the study focuses on dams and water tanks dug by the ancient kings for irrigation. Evidences are obtained from stone inscriptions, erected near the lakès and dams by the kings. These inscriptions explain the purpose of digging canals, lakes, reservoirs, and the benefits enjoyed by the peasants. Several hundred Thet-kayits—Land Mortgage written on Parabaiks of the Konbaung Period are also studied to know the socio-economic life of the people, system of water distribution and rate, maintenance of the lakes and dams, and the benefits. A study is also made on the economic conditions of the rural people and other relevant factors like land values, crops and cattle prices and other commodity prices. A detail account of money-lending business and relations between creditors and the debtors that greatly reflect on the lives of landowners and peasantry is highlighted. _bPh.D _cUniversity of Mandalay _d2010 |
