502 ## - DISSERTATION NOTE
Dissertation note This thesis is an initial step on the path leading to English translation and a new critical edition of the first written Abhidhamma manual, the Abhidhammavatara. It addresses two main aspects of that step: the approach to editing the Pali text and the strategies for translation. The approach to editing is informed by the textual tradition available, which includes twelve manuscripts and two printed editions as primary sources, and commentaries on the text both in the form of manuscripts and printed versions. The thesis gives a detailed description of these sources, the analysis of the relationships between the manuscripts and the editorial policy arrived at as the result of the analysis.
As for the translation, the thesis proposes two possible strategies that are informed by the purpose of translation and two distinct audiences of readers. One of them is source-oriented (or Literal) and another, target-oriented (or free). The problems and procedures of translation associated with both are discussed.
Since both editorial work and the final stage of translation, i.e. laying out the edition and the translations on the page, deployed modern digital tools, the last part of the thesis is dedicated to them.
The implementation of the discussed and described approaches and procedures is appended to the thesis in its short form as sample pages of the edition and the translations, and in a longer form at https://abhidhammavatara.
