Dissertation note This dissertation intends to explore the Dhatukatha text, the third book of the Abhidhamma Pitaka. As the subject matter of Abhidhamma is ultimate realities (paramattha-dhamma), the text also extensively and comprehensively analyses them, yet significantly with specific reference to three schemata: 5 aggregates, 12 sense bases, and 18 elements by using 14 methods. The style of composition is noticeably contrasted to that of other books of Abhidhamma because it is written entirely in question-and-answer form. Overall, the whole text is formulated based on the four main principles (nayamukha): unclassification, associatiion, and diassociation. The employed 14 methods re indeed derived from them. So, the principles constitute the substratum of the text and play a crucial role in analyzing the subjective matter. To understanding them, a large part of the present study is devoted to analyzing them integrating with the comparison of the methods.<br/>The thesis consists of four chapters.
