Dissertation note This dissertation is a study of "A Buddhist Response to Environment Problems: Plastic Crisis in Shan State". The general themes in the discussion are divided into two parts. Part one is about Buddhist attitudes toward environment and another is the plastic crisis in Shan State of Myanmar.
In particular, there are some questions into account of the study as such;
-Is it appropriate for monks to engage in environmental issues?
-How have theories and works of Thai ecology monks been applied in protecting the environment in Myanmar, especially Shan State?
-If and how do Buddhists protect the environment?
-If and how do Buddhists deal with 'plastic crisis'?
The proposed study is to explore how a Buddhist response to environmental problems throughout the canonical texts from Buddhist perspectives. Regarding to Buddhist ecology, a tradition of ordination a tree and releasing life have been argued by scholars. This is in the case scholars believe that the environmental crisis is a new problem in our time. From the Buddha time, even in canonical text, the teaching on environment did not discuss widely as there was yet such a critical ecological problem. However, there are many different point of views among Buddhist scholars.
For my finding data information, I collected from 9 respondents of Lang-khur which is one of the townships in Shan State on February 16-24, 2020.
Key concepts in this study are such as Buddhist attitudes toward the environment, contemporary scholarship on Buddhist ecology, relationship between economic development and its impact of ecology, Buddhist economic perspective, plastic crisis and solutions for environmental problems and plastic crisis.
