  <note>ABSTRACT

In the present work, the radionuclide contained in sediment samples from Lashio and Kyaukme hot springs in Northern Shan States were determined. Firstly, the cool water near Lashio hot spring was also analyzed by chemical method for hazardous and toxic elements. By chemical method, no components hazardous to health and no toxic substances were found. According to the result obtained, the water at 30°C could be made drinkable but only after intensive boiling The gamma activities were measured to investigate the radionuclides in the sample by using Nal(TI) gamma ray spectrometer. By analyzing the spectrum following radio isotopes were investigated. They are 228 Ac, 213Pb, 208 TI, 226Ra, 214Pb and 214Bi. Concentration of these nuclides in sediment samples were calculated by using measured data and literature values. All radionuclide concentrations in hot spring samples were found to be very low percentage. In order to identify the origin of these activity and concentration, the soil samples 50ft away from Lashio hot springs were also measured but the above mentioned radionuclides were not found. So the measured activities were definitely emitted from hot spring water, not from around the hot spring. PhD Department Of Physics, University Of Mandalay, 2007.</note>
