  <note>ABSTRACT

Möng-nai Township is situated in Southern Shan States. It is included in the Nine Shan Saw-bwaship and it occupies the best geographical location. It is strategically important for its proximity to the Myanmar territory and its easy and smooth communication with Myanmar and other Shan territories. The successive Myanmar Kings usually conferred to him the royal privilege of bearing a white umbrella in royal audiences and ceremonies. Every years at the beginning and end of Buddhist Lent Möng-nai Saw-bwa was invited to be presented at the royal. coronation ceremonies to pay homage to the king and submit tributes, presents and valuable gifts. Moreover, the Möng-nai Saw-bwas had to present their daughters in marriage to the king. Therefore relations between Möng-nai Saw-bwa and Myanmar kings were cordial and friendly. When the central power declined, they rebelled against the Myanmar kings and stood independently. To carry out proper administration of his Saw-bwa Region, subordinate officials such as Kya-maing, Myo-sas, Hein, Hta-mon, Kyawt assisted him in his daily functions. Paddy was the mainstay crop, both for consumption and export. Other products were Shan paper, coarse cloth weaving. Many varieties of crops and commodities entered the five-day cycle (once-in five days) itinerant market. During the Colonial Period Christianity, mainly the American Baptist Missionaries entered Möng-nai The Buddhists community, through the centuries of devotion and propagation built pagodas, temples and monasteries and offered generous charity for the perpetuation of the Sasana. The general conditions of Möng-nai Region in the realms of politics, economy, social, culture, education, health care, highlighting the unique and admirable characteristics in the history of Möng-nai and its interesting people are evaluated and analytically presented in this dissertation.
