A Comparative Study Of Two Cities: Lawk Sawk And Lai Hkathrough Ages (1752-1948) Khin Thet Wail

by Khin Thet Wai 4PhD-Hist-22.

Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Not fiction Mandalay: Department Of History, University Of Mandalay, 2014Dissertation note: ABSTRACT This dissertation is to study history of Lawk Sawk and Lai Hka states from 1752 to 1948 A.D. highlighting the political, economic and social development as well as the awesome military power of the two Saw-bwas all along the dynasties of Myanmar kings. During the Konbaung Dynasty, the Myo-su-sas of Lawk Sawk and Lai Hka were appointed to full Saw-bwa with the privileges, titles and special insignias by the Myanmar sovereigns. When the Myanmar Kingdom fell under the British Imperialist, Lawk Sawk Saw-bwa Sao Waing fought valiantly against them. In contrast Lai Hka Saw-bwa affiliated himself to the British Imperialist forces in the same way as he had submitted to the Myanmar sovereigns. Thus the British rulers continued to accede the Saw-bwa status as before. In addition he was conferred the title of K.S.M., and C.I.E. During Myanmar's struggle for independence, Lai Hka Saw-bwa Sao Num was one of the signatories of Pang Long Agreement in February 1947. Such significant characteristics of Lawk Sawk and Lai Hka states and continuous progress through the stages of history has been thoroughly analyzed and appreciated. Extensive original research was applied as much as possible for authenticity to make this research dissertation. PhD Department Of History, University Of Mandalay, 2014. A Sociological Approach To Perfection (Pāramī): Focusing On Morality ( Sīlapāramī) As Practised By Venerable Khruba Boonchum In Shan Society, Myanmar Ven. Dayweinda Yeehsai

by Dayweinda Yeehsi, Ven. I.D. No. 6019543.

Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Not fiction [Bangkok]: Graduate School of Human Sciences, Assumption University Of Thailand, 2019Dissertation note: ABSTRACT This dissertation is an effort to understand the relationship between a spiritual leader or a 'Spiritually advanced being' and his followers within the tradition of Theravada Buddhism. Much of the older sociological interpretations of Theravada Buddhism focus on its individualistic character centred on individual enlightenment. Holy monks or arahants are considered to be detached from their followers. These misunderstandings are the result of various secular sociological interpretations of Buddhism. This research will demonstrate that there is a defining bind between individual enlightenment and social responsibility. This relationship can be traced back to the Buddhist scriptures and literature. Secular sociology interprets the authority of a holy monk through the concept of charisma, which in the Greek original 'khárisma' suggests a divine gift given to the individual, a gift that can be used either for good or to mislead one's followers. A more accurate Buddhist understanding of this authority may be described as a power built up through individual spiritual practice and through one's relationship with society. Charisma in Buddhism is also based on individual effort or Kumma relating to one's previous actions called pärami, literally translated as perfection. The practice of perfection and morality bear direct social significance, fostering social harmony, integrity, peace, and stability. This research first introduces the organising theoretical framework of the sociology of religion of Émile Durkheim and Max Weber. The researcher engages with various approaches to Buddhist social philosophy and Buddhist sociology. The Buddhist concept of ten perfections and the perfection of morality are discussed and understood as lying at the core of any charismatic authority. The dissertation explores the socio-cultural context of the Shan people of Myanmar, their traditional beliefs and their moral practices, which are related to the practice of the perfection of morality. The research goes on to explore charismatic leaders and spiritual Masters of the Shan in contemporary society, particularly Venerable Khruba Boonchum, and argues against the secular sociological misinterpretations which see the authority of such leaders as having millenarian and utopian characteristics. Finally, this research considers a model of Buddhist sociology based upon spiritual and moral teachings rooted in the Buddhist scriptures and literature, thereby showing the limitations of secular sociological understandings of Buddhism. This is a qualitative research done by studying Leekluang scripture, Tipitaka in Taiyai language, textbooks, academic articles and related research works. Contents analysis was done in descriptive forms. In the study, it was found that Buddhism in Shan's state was obviously derived from Thai Lanna and this can be proved through Lannä sources of evidence till the present. In this matter, Chiangtung is held as its centre and later on Buddhism moved from Myanmar to Shan's state. The development of government system in Shan's state has been divided into three categories: Taiyai members of Sangha, Taikheen members of Sangha and Myanmar members of Sangha. Viewed from Sangha's education in Shan's sate, the curriculum of Pariyattidhamma is operated bySangha in this state and WatPitakatBangluang becomes the centre of this education system. But TaikheenSangha's system is in WatHuakhuang; they follow Thaisystem of ecclesiastical education and university's system in government. education. When it comes to Dhamma practice, it was found that by and large, they also practice insight medication and concentration development in various occasions such as retreat rainy season, the end of Buddhist lent etc. most of them are old people from 45-50 years of ages. They follow Taiyai Shan's state culture while practicing Dhamma. As regards, Buddhist scriptures, there are Luang scripture, TaiyaiTipitaka, Vessantarajätaka made from Palm leaves till digital period. With respect to Buddhist rites, there are many rites concerning wedding ceremony and funeral ceremony. While carrying out those rites Buddhist chanting is being done differently from Taiyai Buddhist community and Taikhuen Buddhists also follow their own culture. As far as the origin and development of Buddhism in Shan's sate is concerned, it is of great benefit towards Taiyai, Taikhuen and Tailue because it serves as the first step leading new generation to education through ordination as novices and this way of life is provided them with higher chance to get education then Myanmar education system. Moreover, such ordination is regarded as the main culture where a son in every family needs to be culturally ordained. However, in this way, Taiyai strong faith has become immune and ways leading to Buddhist way of life in terms of contentment, moderation owing to Myanmar's outdated system of ruling resulting in people's many difficulties; only Dhamma can effectively cure Taiyai mental diseases of suffering. The opportunity in the extension of education from only Dhamma and Påli made by Sangha to university's system has been giving rise to Buddhist monks' expansion of education through exchanging culture and methods of management. Such the application of management has been adjusting people's mindset to new visions in Taiyai daily life yielding the better quality than ever if compared with the past. A Study On Economically Important Plants In Yatsauk Township, Southern Shan State Wai Wai Naing

by Wai Wai Naing.

Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Not fiction Yangon: Department Of Botany, University Of Yangon, 2008Dissertation note: ABSTRACT Myanmar, being an agriculture based country, increasing agricultural productivity is very important for the country's economy. Food, the essential need for man and animal primarily comes from plants in the form of cereals, pulses, vegetables and fruits. The agricultural products of Shan State, one of the high agricultural producing state of Myanmar were not only transported to the other divisions and States of Myanmar but some are exported to other countries especially China. Most of the local people of this study area earned their living by agriculture for generations. The investigation on economic important plants were made in Lwekoe, Hptaungtaw, Kaungpo, Alegyaung, Myegyigon, Mgaungtaw, Yantwin village tracts of Yatsauk township, Southern Shan State during 2005 to 2007. Preliminary survey trips were made to three villages for each crop studied: Myegyigone, Thapyepinhla, Thayetthoepin, Kantalet, Myeni, Naungphan, Alegyaung, Kaungpo, Lwekoe for fruit crops, Lwekoe, Pinhpi, Myeni, Myegyigone, Myaungtaw, Nyaungpintha, Shinethe, Kaungpo for oil seed crops and Pinhpi, Myeni, Shinthe, Hpaungtaw, Alegyaung, Kaungpo, for the other economic crops. Interviews with the growers and collection of agronomic data were undertaken. The data concerning with economic important plants such as cultural practices, yield, selling prices, marketing, transporting condition were recorded and presented with relevant photographs. The data analyses of cost, income, profit of agricultural products of farms each crop were presented in tables and graphs. Economic analysis data indicated that a:nong the fruit crops, sweet orange was the most profitable crop per acre but the highest percent of profit was obtained from mango (sein-ta-lone) because the investment per acre was lesser. Thus local people are starting to grow mango (sein-ta-lone), more than other fruit crops. Among oil seed crops, groundnut was the most profitable crop per acre as well as the highest percent of profit, although the profit per acre of sunflower was lower the percent of profit was more or less the same as groundnut. It was also found that although the profit of niger seed was lower, it is grown more than other oil seed crops because it can be exported to other countries. Comparing all the ten economic crops studied the most profitable crop both per acre and percentage was garlic followed by soybean and then by groundnut and sunflower. Strawberry was the least profitable crops and was cultivated in small area only. The yield of the crops was also found to depend on the cultural practices of the villages that employ suitable land preparation, spacing; application of sufficient irrigation fertilizer and insecticides. A Study On Some Plants Used For Cough And Asthma In Traditional Medicine From Northern Shan State Swe Mar Tin

by Swe Mar Tin.

Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Not fiction Mandalay: Department of Botany, University Of Mandalay, 2008Dissertation note: ABSTRACT Twenty seven species of the medicinal plants which relieved from suffering cough and asthma that used by some Myanmar Traditional Practitioners of Lashio, Kyaukme, Namtu, Tangyan, Theinni and Thipaw areas in Northern Shan State were selected and presented in this paper. Specimens were identified according to Hooker (1879), Kirtikar and Basu (1933), Backer (1963), Hutchinson (1967), Brandis (1971) and Dassanayake (1980-1998). Fresh and powder leaves of Ageratum conyzoides L... Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M. King & H. Robinson, and Piper betle L. were studied with the methods of Wallis (1967), Trease and Evans (1978) and Evans (2002). Elemental analysis was conducted by using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometery (AAS) methods. Among the three species studied, Ageratum conyzoides L. have the highest Ca concentration possessing 16.47 ± 0.005 ppm while Piper betle L. contained the highest Mg concentration having 8.412 ± 0.007 ppm. Various solvents extracts of leaves of the three species showed the antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis. Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus pumalis, Candida albicans and Escherichia coli. Water extract of Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M. King & H. Robinson, leaves showed no activity while Ageratum conyzoides L.. showed activity against Escherichia coli and Piper betle L. showed activity against Bacillus subtilis respectively. The freshly expressed leaf juice of the 3 species with salt was given with boiled water to the patients suffering congested chest, cough and asthma. The dosage was increased due to the degree of severity of the patients. The patients resulted effectively from suffering after 10 to 15 minutes of taking medicine. The patients were found to be lowered their blood pressure after taken the medicine for three days. It was also found out that fresh juice of leaves were more effective than powdered form. A Study on the Decline of Temple Sleeping Practice in Mong Pawn. Sai Sia Wan

by Sia Wan, Sai 2025PDE005.

Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Not fiction Taunggyi: Shan State Buddhist Unviersity, 2026Dissertation note: Abstract This Independent Study Project (ISP) examines the decline of the traditional practice of "temple sleeping" among the Shan Buddhist community in Mong Pawn, Loilem Township, Southern Shan State, Myanmar. For centuries this old custom, where lay devotees, spend the night at the monastery to meditate and follow the Eight Precepts, has been essential for passing on Shan culture and Buddhist values to the next generation. However, this study finds that the tradition is declining. This is visible not only because fewer young people participate, but also because older people are practicing it less deeply than before. Data were collected by using a case study approach through interviews with 20 people (10 elders and 10 youth) and observations of temple activities during three Uposatha cycles. The analysis identified four main reasons for this decline: (1) fewer people can read Lik Long (classical Shan scripture) and Zare (poet-reciters) are disappearing; (2) the Pwe Saga (almsgiving) system is weakening due to labor migration, political instability, and drug issues; (3) a wide generation gap caused by digital distractions, economic pressures, and the misconception that meditation is only for the elderly; and (4) traditional festivities are fading, as they are being replaced by smartphones and social media. The study concludes that the temple sleeping tradition is not just facing challenges; it is actively declining. This is most visible in the loss of Lik Long knowledge transmission and the fact that young people are absent from Pwe Saga responsibilities. Without deliberate action, such as teaching Lik Long through short courses, modernizing youth engagement with Dhamma through social media, improving temple facilities for elders, and changing how different generations view this practice, this living heritage may not survive beyond the current generation. A Symbol Of A Particular Culture: The Meaning Of Tea Leaf In Palaung Nation, Nam San Township, Shan State (North)

by Yee Yee Cho.

Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Not fiction Yangon: Department Of Anthropology, University Of Yangon, 2012Dissertation note: ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to elicit the role of tea leaf in Ta Ang (Palaung) traditional culture and subsistence patterns especially of those who live in Namhsan Township. The study identify the connection between economic life of Ta Ang (Palaung) and tea leaf, describe the meaning of value on tea leaf in Ta Ang (Palaung), and illustrate the cultural symbol of tea leaf for Ta Ang (Palaung). This study is done from the symbolic anthropological point of view. The Palaungs call themselves in their own language as "Ta Ang". Tea production is the main source of income for Ta Ang national. The tea leaf is considered to be a metaphor of Ta Ang (Palaung) nationals at present. The King Alaung Sithu who was one of the famous kings in Myanmar, gave the seeds (tea) to Ta Ang (Palaung). Then they started to cultivate the tea as their main crop and after that, their life has been mainly related to the tea plantation. Because of the giving the tea seeds by King Alaung Sithu, they held the festival in memory of King Alaung Sithu annually. Tea leaf is not staple food for Ta Ang (Palaung) but it is important one. There is quite difference between the perception of tea leaf in other people and the Ta Ang (Palaung). They love tea plant and they satisfy their lives living with tea plantation business. Ta Ang (Palaung) nationals are born, grow up, and die under the tea plant. They consider Laphet as their benefactor. There are two festivals concerning Laphet (tea leaf) in Ta Ang: Community (bHk) Kathein pwe and Lwai Sai pagoda festival. By studying these festivals, find out their perception of Tea Leaf in their live. The symbolic importance of tea leaf has been deeply embedded in the Ta Ang's traditional belief and daily life: tea leaf as their soul, tea leaf as their benefactor, and tea leaf as self. Administration Under King Thibaw (1878-1885) Sann Sann

by Sann Sann 4PhD(R)-Hist-17.

Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Not fiction Mandalay: Department of History, University of Mandalay, 2010Dissertation note: ABSTRACT This dissertation titled "Administration Under King Thibaw (1878-1885)" consisted of four chapters, namely Central Administration, Provincial Administration, Tax and Revenue and Judicial System. In the chapter one Central Administration, there were Hlutyon Ngayat or Five Royal Courts, describing how the kingdom was governed through these Five Royal Courts and the distribution of authority and responsibilities among them. It also touched on the reorganization of the administrative set-up by delineating the authority into departments according to functions, in a move towards modernization. In the area of Provincial Administration, the paper touched upon the formation of 10 districts, each administered by a District Officer as head of district, assisted by subordinate officials. Many laws, edicts and regulations were promulgated, but eventually suffered failures due to non-compliance by the very officials who were responsible to effectively implement them. It also touched on the administration of the Shan State under the Shan Sawbwas, ruling their domains as virtual feudal chiefs. The breakdown of sensible administration led to the defiance against King Thibaw's rule, and consequent rebellion by the Shan and Kachin ethnic chiefs. In revenue administration, the nature of assessment and collection of various kinds of revenue, namely: land revenue, water tax, Thathameda tax, export tax, import tax, mineral tax, forest revenue, bazaar tax, toll tax, ferry tax ete were touched in the discussion and presentation. In addition there existed certain types of revenue such as tributes, court fees and lottery tax. In Judicial Administration under King Thibaw, mention was made on the reform of civil and criminal trials, edicts and notifications issued for general compliance by the trial judges, and the breakdown of law and order, leading to the increase in the number of court cases. Analysis Of Radionuclides Contained In Sediments From Some Hot Springs In Northern Shan State Khin Su Su Han

by Khin Su Su Han.

Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Not fiction Mandalay: Department Of Physics, University Of Mandalay, 2007Dissertation note: ABSTRACT In the present work, the radionuclide contained in sediment samples from Lashio and Kyaukme hot springs in Northern Shan States were determined. Firstly, the cool water near Lashio hot spring was also analyzed by chemical method for hazardous and toxic elements. By chemical method, no components hazardous to health and no toxic substances were found. According to the result obtained, the water at 30°C could be made drinkable but only after intensive boiling The gamma activities were measured to investigate the radionuclides in the sample by using Nal(TI) gamma ray spectrometer. By analyzing the spectrum following radio isotopes were investigated. They are 228 Ac, 213Pb, 208 TI, 226Ra, 214Pb and 214Bi. Concentration of these nuclides in sediment samples were calculated by using measured data and literature values. All radionuclide concentrations in hot spring samples were found to be very low percentage. In order to identify the origin of these activity and concentration, the soil samples 50ft away from Lashio hot springs were also measured but the above mentioned radionuclides were not found. So the measured activities were definitely emitted from hot spring water, not from around the hot spring. PhD Department Of Physics, University Of Mandalay, 2007.
