Publisher: Taunggyi: Shan State Buddhist University, 2025Dissertation note: This Study initially explores the concept of stress, its root causes, cessation , and the path to its final cessation through the lens of the Four Noble Truths as presented in Buddhist Psychological Teachings (BPTs). Furthermore ,it also examines the contributions of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, which is one of the most well-known secular therapeutic approaches for managing stress in today's world. In addition, the concept of stress in BPTs originates from the Buddha's teachings and offers a deeper understanding of its nature and causes first before progressing toward its final cessation .Similarly ,MBSR also views stress as a common mental challenge that encountered in daily life and suggests many applications that integrate mindfulness and awareness to cope with it.Finally, by examining both perspectives through the lens of the Four Noble Truths, this study identifies both key similarities and differences . Most importantly, it also compares both approaches to determine whether stress can be completely eradicated or merely released or merely released temporarily. Publisher: Taunggyi: Shan State Buddhist University, 2020Dissertation note: This dissertation intends to explore the Dhatukatha text, the third book of the Abhidhamma Pitaka. As the subject matter of Abhidhamma is ultimate realities (paramattha-dhamma), the text also extensively and comprehensively analyses them, yet significantly with specific reference to three schemata: 5 aggregates, 12 sense bases, and 18 elements by using 14 methods. The style of composition is noticeably contrasted to that of other books of Abhidhamma because it is written entirely in question-and-answer form. Owing to its very technical exposition, it is the least read among the Abhidhamma texts. Overall, the whole text is formulated based on the four main principles (nayamukha): unclassification, associatiion, and diassociation. The employed 14 methods re indeed derived from them. So, the principles constitute the substratum of the text and play a crucial role in analyzing the subjective matter. To understanding them, a large part of the present study is devoted to analyzing them integrating with the comparison of the methods.

Publisher: Taunggyi: Shan State Buddhist University, 2025Dissertation note: This study examines the benefits of Loving-Kindness (metta) meditation for physical and mental health, and also explores spiritual development based on the Karaniya Metta Sutta. (Metta) is Loving-Kindness, friendliness, goodwill, non-violence, and it is indeed a universal, unselfish, and all-embracing love. It is one of the crucial qualities for human beings to maintain good physical and mental health, and it is one of the ten perfections that the Buddha practiced for the benefit of all living beings. The research is grounded in a desire to deepen my understanding of Loving-Kindness (metta), exploring how it's presented in both Pali discourses and scholarly works. The study aims to clarify (mettas) significance, meaning, practice, and its impact on physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Additionally, this qualitative study uses textual analysis, primarily examining the Suttanipata Pali and relevant scholarly works. This paper researches the benefits of practicing Loving-Kindness (metta), focusing on its contributions to physical and mental health, and specifically how it can lead to the noble stage of a strem-enterer sotapanna and an arhantship. Moreover, the findings of this research paper indicate that genuinely cultivating Loving-Kindness (metta) offers practitioners protection from external dangers and leads to significant mental development. Ultimately, this practice is found to facilitate liberation from all suffering. This study discusses the impact of (metta) Loving-Kindness on physical and mental health from a Theravada Buddhist perspective for further empirical study. Publisher: Taunggyi: Shan State Buddhist University, 2025Dissertation note: This independent study project focuses on the Kuddaka-Nikaya of the Sutta-Nipata through the Mangala Sutta, as well-known blessings discourse. The Mangala sutta includes 38 blessings, a special way to enhance personality and society. The Buddha claimed that blessing (Mangala) is the path to lasting peace and happiness. Hence, the Buddha used the opportunities to teach the true blessings rather than focusing on superstitions, and he said that individuals can create their own blessings through their actions. Subsequently, the Mangala sutta has the ability to select one's own life direction and control their own destiny. Thu, several scholars approach this verse as useful for enhancing personality and society.
This paper will explore general education ideas and insights from the third verse of the Mangala-Sutta in Theravada Buddhism, which can contribute to living an easy life through moral conduct. Chapter two will discuss general education as a concept of comprehending knowledge that can make progress daily in enhancing personality and society. Subsequently, the outcome of applying general education in art and science can become one's habit. Chapter Three explores the concept of the well-disciplined, which can help one to comprehend the value of human beings and care for their life. Then, in observing moral conduct, one can redevelop oneself and society. In addition, understanding ideas of effective communication with others is a part of general education. Ultimately, the benefit of embedding this verse is a comprehension of general education and moral conduct, which are the foundation for living standards: it means that one cares for others. By implementing two aspects, individuals can accomplish their goals. The outcomes of general education can assist us in achieving a successful life. ; Literary form:

Publisher: Taunggyi: Shan State Buddhist University, 2025Dissertation note: The Buddha's teachings on governance, which originated more than 25 centuries ago in India, remain timeless and applicable both in the past and in contemporary settings. The significance of the Buddha's governance principle lies in its approach to righteousness, which balances the authority of the ruler. From a Buddhist perspective, righteousness does not only provide practical benefits for preserving the law and justice in the country but also helps improve the spirituality of the ruler and people being ruled. Therefore, this independent study project (ISP) has presented the Buddha's governance principles in three categories fostering the finding of righteousness in the Buddha's governance principles. This paper has found that either the self-governing principle (attadhipati) or the worlds as a governing principle (lokadhipati) were rooted in the righteousness principles (dhammadhipati). Thereby, this paper has summarised that the Buddha fosters righteousness as the essence of his instruction on governance. However, this ISP only traces the Buddha's implication of righteousness in governing principles of his time; thus, further research on the application of righteousness in contemporary times. Taunggyi : Shan State Buddhist University, 2025Dissertation note: Abstract - This research aims to explore the students' dropout rates from the new curriculum of the Pariyattisadhammapala Examination Board of the Shan State Sangha Council from 2021 to 2025, alongside with the causes behind the dropout rates, Moreover, it identified each of the reasons that contribute to the dropout rates. Additionally, it also highlighted some of the progress of a new curriculum offered by the Shan State Sangha Education Committee (SSSCEC). This research was initially carried out through empirical research based on the student dropout rate from a new curriculum of SSSCEC, a critical issue that needs to be solved urgently. Even though SSSCEC has encountered high dropout rates in most townships, this study project only selected ten highly dropout townships out of the 36. Therefore, it would be beneficial for SSSCEC if further research continues to explore the left of the townships dropout rates. I conducted an exploratory aurvey of the opinions of the two main participant groups: the senior monk's group and the student participant's group, who are enthusiastic about a new curriculum, as well as the senior monk group. On the other hand, the student involved in this study project have been simultaneously following since the beginning of the new curriculum in 2021. Therefore, it can be considered that both groups have sufficient information in order to know the reasons for the student dropout rates. By doing this, the project will enhance and contribute to the Pariyattisaddhammapala Examination Board in order to maintain that critical issue. An exposition on Abhidharmakoshasyam of Vasubandhu / Mya Mya Yee by Mya Mya Yee. Material type: Text; Format:

Language: English Taunggyi : Shan State Buddhist University, 2021Dissertation note: Abstract
This study focuses on a commentary of Sarvati-Abhidharma-text (i.e., Dharmatrata's Abhidharmahrdaya of early 5th century CE work), the first work of vasubandhu, a Sarvastivada monk, namely Abhidharmakosabhasyam (5th century CE), in Sanskrit. Sarvastivadin-s opposed him in Sanghabhadra's Nyayanusara, due to what he criticized on Sarvasti-othodoxy that led debates in 5th century. Later he joined his brother Asangha's Yoghacara school then he converted to Mahayana. Abhidharmakosabhasyam is a popular text in northern and estern Buddhist societies through times. Many scholars translated it into their languages, some scholars wrote commentaries, and some edited the text and compared with others. Although ancient Indian Abhidharma masters argued Vasubabdhy's dharma theory, Indian scholars in later times; Lata Bapat studied the text with new perspectives and analyzed Vasubandhu's human theory in a positive way. The text offers key knowledge of the Truths, Samsara, Nirodha and Anatta; some of which are closer to the way how dharma exists in Theravasa Buddhism, i.e. it does temporarily in three momentary phenomena. In Myanmar, both Buddhist traditions are thought to be well grown till before Bagan period (11th century CE); later Theravada Buddhist-texts in Pali literature get more attractive to academia. Sanskrit Buddhism is not faded away here, that is evidenced by the fact that clarifying difficult points of Buddhist studies remained recorded in Sanskrit texts. This paper is intended for letting Burmese scholars and lay Buddhists, taste about similarities and differences between what they already known and the prominent non-Theravada Buddhist text; Abhidharmakosabhasyam (5th century CE)" that serving as a detour (from a sort of Mahayanism) leading towards today "Theravada Buddhist Abhidhamma" in Myanmar through which later time development of Buddhist Abhidharma in the world could be easily accesible. The kamma-paccaya highlights the causal relationship between volitional actions and their outcomes, emphasizing that wholesome actions and their outcomes, emphasizing that wholesome actions such as kindness, wisdom, and generosity lead to positive results in both personal health and business success. The upanissaya-paccaya illustrates how past unwholesome actions can be transformed through present wholesome deeds, offering a pathway to overcome regret. The ahara-paccaya underscores the interdependence of physical and mental nourishment, emphasizing the role of nutrition, contact, volition, and consciousness in sustaining life and fostering well-being.
Be analyzing these conditions, the study provides for healthcare providers and business people, advocating for mindful lifestyles and ethical frameworks in business strategies. The findings suggest that success in health and business in deeply rooted in the cultivation of wholesome actions based on the cause-and-effect model. This research contributes to interdisciplinary approach between philosophy, psychology, and management, demonstrating the timeless relevance of Theravada Buddhist teachings in addressing modern challenges by using Sutta and real-life stories. Language: English Publisher: Taunggyi : Shan State Buddhist University, 2020Dissertation note: This thesis addresses a much debated controversy as to whether violence as pre-emptive self defence to protect the Buddhasāsana is provisionally allowed in the original spirits of Buddhism. Based upon early Buddhist texts, namely the pāli Mahāparinibbāna-sutta, its parallels in Dīghagama and Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinayavastu, and other suttanta texts, especially Anguttara-Nikāya in the Pāli canon and the Chinese Āgama, factors contributing to the longevity of the Buddhasāsana are compared and analysed. The overwhelming majority of these texts point to internal factors within the Sangha as crucial for the long-lasting of the Buddhasāsana. These factors include unity of the Sangha, mental cultivation, higher virtue, Saddhamma learning and preservation. Particular emphasis is directed to unity of the Sangha with reverence for the teacher (the Buddha), the Dhamma and the Sangha being foremost on which all other supportive factors are founded. When compared with factors leading to the decline of medieval Indian Buddhism by contemporary scholarship, we find a close resemblance with those listed in early Buddhist texts. There is absolutely no justifiable violence explicity encouraged in these texts. It is, therefore, concluded that it is the internal affairs and conducts of the Sangha which play principal roles in the non-decline of the Buddhasāsana. Empowering Learning : an analytical study of Saddha in Theravanda buddhist perspective / Venerable Tejananda. by Tejananda, Venerable. Material type: Text; Format:

; Literary form:

Taunggyi : Shan State Buddhist University, 2025Dissertation note: Abstract - This dissertations relates to the intergration of saddha into learning education in terms of the Theravada Buddhist perspective. Saddha is described as one of the beautiful mental formations (cetasika) and an essential quality that enhances personal skills and social harmony in terms of Theravada Buddhist literature because it is similar to a best friend who brings substantial benefits and followers to us (SN, 1, 31) and also similar to the rations for the journey (SN,1, 41). In terms of these concepts, saddha supports all good things that are beneficial for us. Thus, I will explore here the concept of saddha in Theravada Buddhist literature based on three categories of saddha: faith in an individual, faith in an object or principle, and faith in oneself in terms of Buddhist philosophy. Next, I will explore the educational psychology and learning theories defined in Buddhist texts and the work of Buddhist scholars. Last but not least, I will investigate the intergration of saddha into educational learning.

Introducing Abhidhamma In The Digital Age: Towards a translation of the Abhidhammavatara and a new critical edition based on digital tools/ Ayya Piyadassi. by Ayya Piyadassi. Material type: Text; Format:

; Literary form:
Not fiction
Publisher: Taunggyi : Shan State Buddhist university, 2021Dissertation note: This thesis is an initial step on the path leading to English translation and a new critical edition of the first written Abhidhamma manual, the Abhidhammavatara. It addresses two main aspects of that step: the approach to editing the Pali text and the strategies for translation. The approach to editing is informed by the textual tradition available, which includes twelve manuscripts and two printed editions as primary sources, and commentaries on the text both in the form of manuscripts and printed versions. The thesis gives a detailed description of these sources, the analysis of the relationships between the manuscripts and the editorial policy arrived at as the result of the analysis.
As for the translation, the thesis proposes two possible strategies that are informed by the purpose of translation and two distinct audiences of readers. One of them is source-oriented (or Literal) and another, target-oriented (or free). The problems and procedures of translation associated with both are discussed.
Since both editorial work and the final stage of translation, i.e. laying out the edition and the translations on the page, deployed modern digital tools, the last part of the thesis is dedicated to them.
The implementation of the discussed and described approaches and procedures is appended to the thesis in its short form as sample pages of the edition and the translations, and in a longer form at https://abhidhammavatara.
